Emily Cartmell

Emily is a Registered Osteopath who studied at the European School of Osteopathy in the UK, graduating in 2013 with an integrated Master’s degree. She then spent a decade working in New Zealand before moving to Sydney. Throughout her career, she has predominantly used functional osteopathic techniques and now practises exclusively as a cranial osteopath.

Her passion lies in the logical principles that underpin osteopathy. Prior to her osteopathic studies, she completed an integrated Master’s degree in Chemistry at Durham University, UK, in 2005. This scientific background shaped the way she thinks—training her to analyse, interpret, and apply concepts to systems that cannot always be directly seen, as well as to visualise structures in three dimensions. She brings this perspective into her understanding of human anatomy and function.

Some of her particular areas of interest include classical osteopathy, as well as osteopathy for pregnancy, infants, and children. Her approach is always to view the body as a whole and, wherever possible, to identify and address the root cause of an issue rather than simply resolving symptoms.

Her interest in the connection between mind and body has also been influenced by her yoga training. In 2009, completing a 500-hour yoga therapy course in the tradition of T. Krishnamacharya, during which she developed skills in observing and analysing restrictions in movement through teaching asana. This training deepened her therapeutic understanding, particularly in relation to breathing and its role in overall health.

In addition, her experience in various forms of dance has given her a strong appreciation for the discipline required to refine movement and achieve performance goals. This further informs her ability to understand how the body moves, adapts, and compensates.

Overall, her combined knowledge of science, yoga, and dance enhances her holistic osteopathic understanding of health and supports a thoughtful, integrated approach to patient care.
