What Is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that develops when pores become blocked by oil, debris, or dead skin cells. This blockage can lead to different types of blemishes, ranging from small comedones to more pronounced spots and lesions. While acne is commonly linked to adolescence, it also affects adults well into their 30s, 40s, and beyond. The condition itself is not infectious, but it can lead to visible marks and changes in skin appearance over time.

What Acne Looks Like

Acne can appear in a variety of forms, including bumps, redness, and raised areas that may feel sore or sensitive. It may be occasional or frequent, and often appears on the face, shoulders, or back. In some cases, the surface of the skin changes in texture or tone as blemishes form and heal. For people with persistent acne, these changes may last longer or appear more widespread, prompting many to seek guidance from an acne specialist.

What Influences Acne?

There is no single cause of acne. Instead, it often develops due to a combination of hormonal shifts, increased sebum production, family history, and reactions to topical products or cosmetics. Some people notice a link between acne and stress, travel, or climate. Certain skincare habits, such as over-cleansing or using incompatible products, may also play a role. In cities like Sydney, environmental factors like heat or humidity can further complicate acne-prone skin.

Experiencing Acne at Any Age

Although acne is often associated with teenage years, many adults also experience ongoing breakouts. These may appear differently from earlier episodes—more localised or inflamed, and more difficult to manage with basic skincare alone. The emotional side of acne should not be overlooked, as visible skin issues can change how someone feels about their appearance, routines, or social settings. Understanding how acne forms is a valuable step in responding thoughtfully to the condition.
